3 out of 5 stars As a "deterrent" yes, but as a safety barrier, unlikely....   September 11, 2008
D. Clawson (Long Beach, CA USA)
For the money, this is a moderately effective deterrent, IF you are not using a dog seat-belt restraint harness. After conducting research regarding vehicle safety and dog travel, I would wholeheartedly advise every dog owner to consider a crate or seat belt harness system. When affixed as pursuant to directions, the Outward Hound screen creates a barrier, but it never looks as taut and evenly fitting as it does in the photo depicted in this review. The small plastic adjustment "buckles" are too easily lengthened and shortened - to the extent that, in even a minor impact or abrupt slamming on of brakes, I doubt that the barrier would contain a dog over 20 pounds. Also, whenever you adjust the driver or passenger seat, the barrier moves as well. From a safety standpoint, I decided to start using a seat belt restraint/harness combination for short trips, [using a wire crate secured in the cargo area for long trips] and so this Outward Hound barrier is unnecessary, as the harness restrains my dog from being able to intrude into the driver/passenger console space. I still have the Outward Hound barrier installed, however, as it provides an excellent alternative use as an adequate grandchild-protection device. It helps prevent me from being pelted with sippy cups and prevents food items from being launched into the front seat area by my two year old grandson - while I am driving down the freeway.

4 out of 5 stars Too short for my car.   August 15, 2008

This barrier was too short for my car. When I fastened it to the headrests it left a gap at the bottom since I have no center console. Great concept but not for my car.

3 out of 5 stars It worked, sort of, for awhile   July 12, 2008

Outward Hound Front Seat Safety Barrier - Black

Our very determined 80 pound lab mix was happy enough to sit in the back seat of our sedan and just hang his head over the barrier to keep us company. That was fine and made for safer driving. However, one evening we left him alone in the car but within sight of us for about 2 minutes. In that time, he vaulted over the barrier and ripped the straps off of one side of the barrier.

It was a good experiment, and not too pricey, but if you are going to leave your dog alone in the car at all, unfasten the buckles to let your dog come into the front seat without destroying the barrier.

3 out of 5 stars Works-but could be much better!   June 11, 2008
Jim Jennings (Rockford, IL United States)
I bought this to keep our 84lb golden retreiver from trying to get into the front of our minivan. It works for that purpose, but the straps aren't really long enough to fit properly between the two front seats. The flap of material also doesn't go all the way to the floor, so smaller dogs could easily go underneath it. Having said all that, it does keep our dog out of the front seats, so both the dog and driver are safer.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't work for me...   May 6, 2008
Nicole Johnson (Pittsburgh, PA United States)
and my 40 lb dog Chaz. He can get under it and over it pretty easily... it does help a bit while you are driving from having his head poke through the seats, but does nothing when the car is parked. It's cheap though, easy to install, and works a little, so I give it 3 stars...
