Amazon.com Review
Bill Phillips had been publishing bodybuilding magazines and marketing nutritional supplements for years when he had a weird revelation at a trade show: many of the most loyal and enthusiastic readers he had were totally out of shape. From that uncomfortable realization came his popular Physique Transformation Contest (top prize that first year: Phillips's own Lamborghini), now world famous, and this book.

The three-times-a-week weightlifting program in Body for Life is deceptively simple. If you've spent any time in the gym, you've already done all the exercises. But Phillips includes a couple of high-intensity sets at the end of each exercise that should compound the training effect on each muscle group. Same goes for the cardiovascular exercise he recommends: just 20 minutes, three times a week. But those 20 minutes are spent jacking the intensity up and down, accomplishing more in less time.

Phillips arranges all this into a 12-week program, along with nutritional and motivational tips. Be warned that the nutritional advice gets a little spacey. For example, he puts "carbohydrates" and "vegetables" into separate categories, and recommends three daily doses of a nutritional supplement called Myoplex, which his company manufactures. (Fortunately, he gives tips on how to make each dose taste different, such as by adding drops of peppermint extract.) Despite this strangeness, Body for Life still motivates because so many others have achieved astounding results in similar 12-week windows, and the pictures and testimonials are here as evidence. --Lou Schuler

5 out of 5 stars Bill Phillips knows his stuff   March 13, 2010

I am a member of [...] where Bill Phillips and his family of transformed people gather together to give each other strength and encouragement. Transforming is a way of reaching a better life, a way of being a better person. I'm very glad to follow Bills teaching.

4 out of 5 stars A solid approach to weight loss   March 3, 2010
Victor Thomas (San Francisco, CA)
Bill Phillips a one time supplement company owner, and magazine publisher wrote Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength in the mid 1990s. Phillips, a long time bodybuilder who published a bodybuilding magazine and owned a supplement company, wanted to bring a bodybuilding program to the masses.

The eating program recommends eating six small meals a day, consisting of a balance between lean proteins, and "good" carbs throughout the day. This is done to rev up your metabolism by eating throughout the day, and also curbs hunger by never being without food. The exercise portion involves working out six days a week alternating between high intensity cardio and weight lifting. The focus of his exercise regimen is high intensity, Phillips recommends interval training over long distance runnning, and short reps at high intensity for weight training.

Most controversial to this diet are the dramatic before and after photos of the participants who have entered Phillips' weight loss challenge. They show what many believe to be impossible transformations in an alleged 12 week period.

Pros

Solid Plan: At the end of the day the program recommends a simple philosophy; eat right and exercise. There's no doubt that working out six days a week and eating a balanced diet of lean healthy foods will make you leaner and healthier.

Cons

False Expectations: The real trap with this diet is the false expectations it might invoke with some of it's users. My assertion is not that the before and after pictures are fake, but that it's likely the people who took them were at one time in great shape before in their life. Muscle memory is a very real thing, and it's much easier for someone who was once in shape to get back in shape, then it is for someone who never was in shape to get there.

Bottom Line

While Phillips has his heart in the right place, he seems to encourage an all or nothing mentality to weight loss. All in all though, this is a very solid and sensible approach to weight loss...if a bit regimented.

1 out of 5 stars May work but not healthy   February 1, 2010
J. L. Rohr
Let me preface this review by saying I have read the book and I tried the program for about 1 week but that's it.

I think this program would work for many people if their goal is short term fat loss and/or muscle gain. However I have done extensive research into health and the role of foods in good nutrition and long term health and this sort of a fad program based on a fair amout of processed foods (such as myoplex bars) is not the way to go. For optimal health and long term body fat management most research points towards a paleolithic-type diet as the most effective.

May be a good start for some but should not be viewed as a good long term solution.

5 out of 5 stars Great Motivator   December 23, 2009

Great book, great exercises, great motivator. If you're not willing to work though, don't buy it. If you are ready for a life-changing body and mind makeover, you'll love this book!

5 out of 5 stars It works   November 21, 2009

I saw a "blurb" about this program on the internet, and it piqued my interest. Always looking for a healthy way to lose and maintain my weight, I thought I would look further into it. Rented a book from the library, "Body for Life Champions" and that really got me interested. I decided to start working the program, without signing up for the challenge (challenges are done at different intervals throughout the year and if I wanted to enter, I would have had to wait until Feb). After working the program for about 2 weeks, I decided I would buy the book "Body for Life". I have been working the program now for about 6 weeks, and though I am not anal about following the eating pattern to a "t", I have been making great headway. Reading this book over and over has kept me motivated and moving. Not only does my body look better, I am full of energy and never feel like I'm missing out on eating (other diets I was always hungry). If there is anything I want during the week, I just say to myself, "I'll have it on my free day." By the time the free day comes along, I've forgotten or the "want" has passed. I would strongly suggest that anybody who is doing the yo-yo diet thing, try this program. It works if you stick with it!
