| Editorial Reviews:
Based on a true story, this inspiring American Playhouse production stars Edward James Olmos as a high school teacher who motivated a class full of East L.A. barrio kids to care enough about mathematics to pass an Advanced Placement Calculus Test. Not exactly a variation of To Sir, With Love, the film concerns itself with assumptions and biases held by mainstream authorities about disadvantaged kids, and Olmos's efforts to keep his students coolheaded enough to prove them wrong. Olmos, virtually unrecognizable as the pudgy, balding instructor, gives a career performance in this fine piece directed by Ramón Menéndez, and written by the director and Tom Musca. --Tom Keogh

This is a very good movie, even though it's 20 years old. The acting is good and it seems realistic. It is based on the true story of Jaime Escalante, who went on to teach math on PBS. I am a high school teacher, and I plan to show the movie to some of my classes this year. They need all the motivation they can get!

Based on a true story, "Stand and Deliver" is an inspirational tale of a dedicated 1982 inner-city L.A. teacher who rescues a group of poor Hispanic students from low expectations by turning them into math whizzes. Using humor, imagination and whatever other means necessary, Jaime Escalante gets his students to spend extra time at school (weekends, summers, early mornings) in order to pass the demanding AP Calculus exam. Escalante does this despite the skepticism and jealousy of other teachers and administrators. Their final hurdle is being accused of cheating by the Educational Testing Service, and having their scores canceled. Escalante then rallies his students again to retake the test, with only one day preparation, proving their integrity and accomplishments.
Making the World a Better Place One Kid at a Time October 6, 2009 Charles R. Hart Jr. (Anchorage, AK USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a true story about a man who leaves a lucrative job in the computer industry in the early 1980s to become a public school teacher working longer hours for much less pay with troubled youth. Against terrific odds he succeeds by encouraging his students to do better, and by believing in them when even the most benevolent school administrators had given up hope of these children ever graduating high school. This one teacher inspires his student to work hard and acchieve amazing goals, but not without many obstacles to overcome. I saw this film when it first came out and again last week. It is still just as relevent, fresh, and heart-warming as it was back in the 1980's. I can not recommend this film highly enough. Edward James Olmos and Lou Diamond Phillips give outstanding performances, but so do the rest of the cast. No one really outshines anyone here because they all are at the peak of their performing careers, giving us their best performances.
