Amazon.com The delightful sitcom The Big Bang Theory revolves around a character type rarely seen on television: The alpha geek. Physicists Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) get their lives shaken up when an attractive young woman named Penny (Kaley Cuoco) moves in to the apartment across from theirs. The key to the show, though, is not that they both fall haplessly in love--Leonard does, but Sheldon remains impermeably aloof and caustic about anything resembling romance or human relationships in general. While the push and pull of Leonard's yearning for Penny motivates much of the series' ongoing plot, the show's real drive comes from Sheldon's fantastic combination of obsessive-compulsive neurosis and grandiose obliviousness. He's a brilliant comic creation, imperious and dorky, a seamless collaboration of clever writing and an inspired performance by Parsons. Whether Sheldon loses his job for insulting his new boss, or finds his ego bruised by a child prodigy, or finds himself unable to bear being part of a lie that Leonard has told, he attacks the world with a relentless need to assert his supremacy--and the results are deeply funny. The triumph of The Big Bang Theory is that everyone is written with genuine affection; what could have been a lifeless parade of stereotypes--Two Nerds and a Hot Chick--becomes instead a charming collision of cultures. The familiar stuff (computer games, comic books, social incompetence) has the grit of specificity; the show understands the difference between Halo and Halo 3, knows what the Bottle City of Kandor is, and grasps the infinite variety of ways in which a conversation can go terribly awry. (Penny gets less nuance, but Cuoco still gives her a distinctive personality.) Kudos as well to supporting players Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar, who bring their own variations on geekiness to the table, and to great appearances by some of Galecki's former cohorts on Roseanne--Sara Gilbert as geekette Leslie and Laurie Metcalf as Sheldon's fundamentalist mother. All in all, one of the most winning sitcoms in years. --Bret Fetzer

Brilliant comedy for nerds, geeks and everyone else :) December 3, 2008 Technospaz (San Francisco, CA) I watched my first episode of The Big Bang Theory on a plane. It was the episode (The Fuzzy Boots Corollary) where Leonard, Sheldon, Wolowitz and Raj were playing a MMORPG (a fitting tribute to World of Warcraft or any similar online game) and they ended up fighting over the Sword of Azeroth, a rare/unique weapon, which ended up on eBay. Within those first few minutes, I was SOLD!
The Big Bang Theory chronicles the lives of 3 main characters, i.e. Sheldon Cooper, Leonard Hofstadter and Penny. Sheldon and Leonard are gifted scientists (though Sheldon claims he is way more gifted than Leonard) and housemates. Penny is the lovely blonde who has moved in next door, much to Leonard's delight. However, neither Leonard nor Sheldon have much luck with women and watching Leonard's attempt to win over Penny is comical and hilarious. The 2 other characters (Wolowitz - the horny jew & Raj - the computer pro from India) are also amazing, and complement the main cast very well.
I guess what draws many to this series is how easily we can relate to the characters (it shows you that there are way more nerds and geeks out there ;)). The cast are fantastic, particularly Jim Parsons who plays Sheldon. Not only do they fit their roles really well, but after a couple of episodes, you can't help but feel that no other actors would do quite as good a job.
This DVD set contains all the 17 episodes from the first series with not many extra features but watching and laughing through each and every episode makes the collection a worthwhile purchase on its own. If you're a geek, a nerd or anyone who just wants a good laugh, this series is for you! :)
Big Bang Theory delivers big laughs November 30, 2008 Patricia Denton (usa) In this world of drama, I was seeking comic relief...You fall in love with these characters amd find yourself rooting for their successes. Social skills are so over-rated and relationships are so complex...these guys live in the truth about everything....they are eluded by the complexities of relationship lies and proticols.....refreshing comic performances....excellent X-mas gift for anyone of intelligence...
Fantastic! November 27, 2008 Lisa (Trenton, NJ USA) I'm not going to repeat the premise of the show (which is very helpful, but already pointed out by others) These actors are truly gifted in making their characters come to life. I have watched and re-watched every episode. While my husband was stationed in Iraq, I had to promise I would record every episode for him, which I did. Afterward I happened to notice the first season for sale. There was no hesitation - I bought it immediately (eventhough I had them all recorded) so I could watch it as often as I wanted, with no fear of data loss. This show is very unique and an absolute pleasure to watch. The intertwined relationships of these characters has so much potential. I truly hope this show will last many years. I find myself actually smiling while watching each episode unfold. Big Bang Theory is exceptional entertainment.
Great show November 27, 2008 JR (Jersey wilderness) Very funny and smart. You can't help but fall in love with the characters. The show is well thought out, greatly written, and is hilarious without trying too hard. I love, love, love this show.
Beter on DVD November 24, 2008 J. Risley (Indianapolis, IN) I love the Big Bang Theory, but seldom get a chance to watch it or tape the show. This was the first time I purchased a complete season of a television show...it was great, no commercials and I was able to get a handle on the characters as they developed. Looking forward to season 2.
