Editorial Reviews:

Based on a 1938 Winifred Watson novel, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day is a colorful story about lives stalled in middle age but kick-started again by the follies of youthful lovers all around. Frances McDormand stars as Miss Pettigrew, whose inability to hold a job in London as a governess compromises her well-being shortly before England's entry in World War II. Finessing her way into a position as social secretary to a young, American golddigger and singer named Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams), the starving Miss Pettigrew finds herself at the center of a whirlwind that is her new employer's life. Hemmed in by lovers and suitors--including a young, theatrical producer (Tom Payne) looking to cast one of his pleasing girlfriends in a plum role; a creepy nightclub owner (Mark Strong) in whose flat Delysia lives; and a pianist (Lee Pace) who genuinely loves her--Delysia needs a map to figure out how to navigate through life. Miss Pettigrew, who suffered a loss during WWI that she does not speak of, nudges the naïve songstress toward wise decisions. But she is at the mercy of Delysia's formidable friend (Shirley Henderson), who knows the truth about her impoverished state and is engaged to a much older man (Ciarán Hinds). The latter, a fellow of substance who seems to be meandering through life, falls instantly for the soulful Miss Pettigrew. Full of Art Deco trappings and paced with a vintage, screwball comedy energy, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day is like watching a contemporary version of a Hollywood classic. --Tom Keogh

Product Description
As in MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS and BEING JULIA, this period comedy brings wit and style to its depiction of 1930s London. Based on Winifred Watson's novel, MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY begins with the title character, a frumpy governess winningly played by Frances McDormand (FARGO), being turned away from her employment agency. After losing her job prospects and all her earthly possessions in a mishap, Guinevere Pettigrew isn't sure where her next meal is coming from. But some cleverness leads her to the door of aspiring actress Delysia Lafosse, a woman who needs a social secretary to juggle her three men: a nightclub owner (Mark Strong), a son of a theater producer (Tom Payne), and a piano player (Lee Pace). The first two offer her a chance at stardom, but the pianist can't give her anything but love. In a single day, Miss Pettigrew helps Delysia navigate the ever-stormy waters of love, while she learns that romance may not only be reserved for the young. With its witty script and jazzy score, MISS PETTIGREW may seem feather-light at times, but there's an undercurrent of sadness that gives the comedy a bit of weight. World War II is just about to come to London, and the echoes of the previous war still haunt those who can remember it. Unsurprisingly, McDormand gives a fantastic performance as the title character, but the effervescent Adams continues to surprise, even after turning in great work in JUNEBUG and ENCHANTED. As impressive as the two female leads are, there are some excellent performances from two male costars: Ciáran Hinds (MARGOT AT THE WEDDING) is perfectly warm as a lingerie designer Miss Pettigrew encounters, and Pace (PUSHING DAISIES) wins hearts as the faithful Michael. Costume designer Michael O'Connor also deserves praise for creating the film's eye-catching clothing.

5 out of 5 stars Good entertainment   March 18, 2010
Robert Glisson (Oklahoma)
By the title, I didn't think I would care for the movie; however, the small below the surface humor continued to keep me interested from beginning to end. A good movie for adult humor, not at all off color or silly but understated pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Hoping for a sequel   February 11, 2010

This movie is so much fun to watch I am hoping for a sequel. Amy Adams must love old movies because she is perfect playing an aspiring actress whose life is an "act." Reminiscent of the madpcap films of yesteryear (think Some Like it Hot) the story sails along. The scenes in which Miss Pettigrew and Joe Bloomfield quietly discuss how WWI changed their lives adds an unexpected poignancy and depth to an otherwise lighthearted romp.

This movie is delicious and feminine; May this reviewer recommend it to you as a Valentines gift for a witty and humourous friend? Like the equally excellent "Julia" (with Annette Benning,) "Miss Pettigrew" is set in London just before the outbreak of the Second World War, using some of the same locations. Unlike "Julia" it's humour is sweet-tempered, presenting the sometimes ticklish romantic situations occurring between the sexes with hilarity. All good persons are rewarded in the end and all bad ones left to ponder their trespasses. Frances McDormand is delightful as Guinivere Pettigrew; Amy Adams is perfect as the ambitious "dumb blond" Delysia LaFosse; handsome Lee Pace is her love and her down fall. Shirley Henderson plays the catty lingerie designer, Edythe DuBarry giving depth to a character that could have been made of cardboard in some one else's hands. The period re-creation is excellent with a great eye for clothing and hair-styles, especially for Miss Adams and Miss Henderson.
