This is an inexpensive white noise machine, and it serves its purpose well. We needed some filler noise to help an 18th month old tune out background noise during the night. We only use one or two of the sounds.
It isn't perfect--I wish the volume dial was a bit more sensative. There is a little jump at the very low settings we use, and it can be hard to nail the right volume. This has not been a major frustration, but just something I noticed. Also, my husband hears the loop in the noise. I don't (well, not it the ones we use). If picking up on the loop makes you crazy, this may not be your best bet.
We take it with us when we travel, but otherwise don't move it around much. It has held up well in the suitcase, so it's sturdy enough for us.
I give it 5 stars because it performs very well for it's price point. If I was shelling out $50 or more, I'd expect the the glitches I mentioned to be fixed. Overall, I say it's a fine little machine.
 Sound terapy machine not so good therapy January 6, 2009

This sound machine was a disappoint. I do not know if it was faulty, or just worked this way. The sound itself was too loud and you could not reduce it. We wanted it to run all night, but it unpredictably went to static off and on. We had no problem returning the item and obtaining a refund.

Our old sound machine failed and we purchased this one. It worked well for a few days and then I noticed a ticking noise. This occurred on all sound sources and was enough to wake us up. I do not know if this was just a defect in our unit or a generic problem with the product. I returned it and am now searching for a different system as I do not want to take the chance again.

My husband has the fan on all summer long, and I didn't realize that the sound helped me go to sleep until summer ended and the fan was turned off. I read about sound machines and researched many of them. This one had good reviews and wasn't too expensive. It looks like some kind of flying saucer, but does exactly what I want it to - that odd front grill is actually the volume. You can either set the 60-minute timer, or just leave the sound on until it's turned off. There are enough sounds to choose from that we easily found one that agreed with us both. So now, no cold air blowing on us, but we still have help going to sleep!

I use it in my office at work and also at home. It adds white noise for the office environment and tranquil soothing sounds to help me fall asleep for home. It is small and compact so I can transport it very easily.
