very disappointed July 7, 2010 Bookaholics Anonymous (Katrinaville) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I tried stevia plus for the first time today after being a regular splenda user for years. I was very excited because I recently went vegan and I've been looking for a good natural sweetener that doesn't add any "background" flavors to my tea. When I read about stevia, I just knew that this was the one to replace splenda but turned out to be a complete let-down.
So I decided to test it out in my favorite tropical green tea. Stevia is supposedly sweeter than sugar, so I was very careful not to over sweeten it at first. After adding only 1/8 teaspoon to my tea, the taste was indescribable. I no longer knew what this liquid was nor could I figure out what it tasted like, but it wasn't tea anymore. Thinking I didn't add enough stevia (I have a huge sweet tooth), I added another 1/8 teaspoon, then another...and another and the taste kept getting progressively worse until I poured the cup of 'mystery liquid' that used to be my favorite tea down the drain. For all I knew it was possessed and it would take over my soul. Now there was this awful aftertaste that I had to deal with.
I can completely understand one reviewer's sentiment that they would rather drink their tea unsweetened. That's where I am right now. My stomach is doing flips. I am so disappointed because I wanted to have the delicious experience that it seems 99% of stevia users have. Unfortunately, that hasn't been my experience. Maybe it's just SweetLeaf's brand I can't tolerate. Maybe it was on the shelf too long...I don't know. It did take quite a while to dissolve the stuff in a hot liquid. But I thought that was normal for a natural herbal sweeetner...until I tasted what it did to my tea. There's nothing natural about that. The only thing I'm certain of is my disappointment with this product.
Like It May 27, 2010 M. Frey SweetLeaf has fewer additives compared to the stevia available in our local stores. Alway good with no after taste. Have used SweetLeaf for several years.
Sweet, Healthy and No Calories April 21, 2010 Maxine (MA) Stevia is more healthful than Splenda, Sweet & Low, etc. I prefer to sweeten my tea and coffee, however, I am unwilling to use sugar because of the calories. I am also leery of other sweeteners which are available, because there is a great deal of controversy regarding their impact on one's health. I wish that stevia was used in diet soda and other products that use artificial sweeteners. The Amazon price is very competitive.
Sweetist Sweet of All The Sweetners! April 19, 2010 King Pigeon (Florida) One packet of SweetLeaf is really sweet, one packet (from my taste and my neighbor taste)is equal to four teaspoons of sugar instead of two as on the box...So, we use half of packet per cup of coffee.
It would go over big in making cakes & cookies.
I will buy another 100 packets at Amazon when I run out of the present supply.
Just stevia! March 19, 2010 Joyce M. Dodd (USA) Having used stevia as a sweetener before, I was happy to see it come into the grocery stores under the brand names Truvia and Stevia in the Raw. However, I found that these products are not pure stevia, but have added components that we attempt to keep out of our diet.
So, we are back to buying what we think is the purest stevia on the market - Sweet Leaf - and the prices and service provided by Swanson Health through Amazon is the best way to go!
Do your research before sweetening anything you injest, and you will purchase Sweet Leaf also. The 'plus' is nice if you are older and less active than you were as a youngster, too!!
