Worthless September 13, 2008 D. Moore 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This magazine is a total scam. It is filled with commonly known information, scattered amongst a ton of ads for other services they offer. You will receive daily emails/spam from them trying to sell you more worthless information at exorbitant prices.
I think someone has found a way to live abroad by profiting on others dreams by a very excessive amount.
Google and the internet will garner you far more valid information without all the daily spam and incredibly excessive costs.
STAY AWAY.
You can STILL buy a beachfront lot, but only if you ACT FAST July 30, 2008 Jerry (North Carolina) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am giving this two stars, rather than one, because I found a lot of new places I had not known about before, and this magazine enabled me to begin my own research. There are many links to International Living's web site where you can get more information (and more advertising). When my subscription expires, in spite of my being annoyed once a month by the "hurry-up-and get-yours" slant, I will miss some of the writers. The same correspondents have articles nearly every month and over the past year I've enjoyed their submissions when they've written about places they actually live, rather than how to beat the swarms sure to pile in next year. But even with Amazon's deeply discounted price, this is not a good value.
As another reviewer pointed out, this magazine (actually more like a newsletter with its 46 pages), is inappropriately named. I would go one step further and name it International Real Estate Speculation, for this is not long-term investing, as last year's "hot spot" has been replaced by this year's best beachfront property, so pristine and deserted, but oh so near to that "sizzling night life" retirees so crave.
But this stock-photo laden, swaying-palm-treed, blue-skied, gall-bladder-removal-at-one-fourth-the-cost vision erodes under scrutiny. Take a look at some of these investment opportunities, in person if you can, or with one of the Internet satellite imaging websites (try Google Earth), and you will see the third-world poverty and crumbling construction that awaits you. That is, unless you opt for the abundant "deals" so heavily advertised in IL, the gated communities with all the comforts you won't need to leave behind in the good ole USA. But hurry, the early buyers will make it big: if you ACT FAST you can cash in on the influx of Europeans sure to swarm to the latest "find."
How to make a killing in the real estate market. Avoid taxes. Find inexpensive high-quality healthcare. Enjoy the "good life." Intimidated by leaving your home country, language, monetary system, friends, relatives, laws, water, safety, food? No problem; come to one of International Living's investing seminars where you will be able to join an elite group of international VIPs who will teach you the secrets only a handful of insiders know about, and you will be able to beat those Europeans to your own place in the sun. But hurry, this offer won't last: as soon as the new road comes in...and the airport, only two hours away...prices will skyrocket. There's still time, but you gotta act fast.
If you are looking for an entry point to foreign investing or speculation, a bit of tax advice, a little health care information, or some new ideas for where you might want to retire outside of the United States, go for it. But if you are looking for a magazine where you can get a feel for what it's like to actually BE in a place rather than buy-sell-move on, then move on yourself.
For international real estate investors only... March 29, 2008 Elena J. Mccants (Raleigh, NC United States) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
A more accurate title for this publication would be International Real Estate Investing. I subscribed to get information about local cultures, qualities of life, advice on how to successfully live abroad, etc.. But this journal is strictly for people who want advice and recommendations about buying property abroad. Most articles feel like infomercials and may involve conflict of interest on the part of the writer. I get the feeling the whole purpose of this magazine is to sell international property. Even when there was a topic of interest to me, their treatment was cursory and did not go into much depth. IL seems to always have 43-46 pages. Here is a list of recurring features:
SPOTLIGHT ON...: specific properties are promoted REAL ESTATE: buying property in a specific country or city LIFE & RETIREMENT: advice about managing retirement investments as it relates to traveling or investing abroad MARKET WATCH: international real estate investment picks or focus on real estate in a particular country PROFILE: a person or couple tell about their experience relocating abroad (mostly about the cost, especially of real estate, of living abroad) GOING OFFSHORE: sample topics: how to get a Swiss bank account; Hidden U.S. "Exit Tax"; setting up an offshore corporation. HEALTH: health care costs abroad
