I Craved This 4 So Long......'til 10 Years Later!!!! December 29, 2009 D. Stevens I really enjoy this CD. I just got hip to it earlier this year. I happened to "find" it while doing a search for Mr. Dorsey. He caught my eye (and ear) on the Crooklyn soundtrack and I kept awaiting for his debut album to be released. I am so shocked I never heard it before now. Like a few other male artists from the '90's, Dorsey was really slept on. He is a true artist. I luv the title cut.....I have several favorites. It's a worthwhile addition to any R&B collection.
Totally slept-on!!!! August 27, 2005 True Music Critic (North Carolina) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is an excellent album from someone that really didn't get a whole lot of exposure and that's really a shame. His explosive and soulful voice gracefully commands every song he does on this album. Of course, the title track is honestly one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in quite some time. Even though it was released in '98-'99, it still hits your heart whenever your hear it. However, coming in a close second is the soothing "What Everybody Knows". Other tracks like his tremendous reworking of the classic Shirley Murdock piece "As We Lay" and "Tell Your Man He's Gotta Go" are also very notable listens. As a whole, this album showcases a badly misused and underappreciated artist and I really hope to hear more from him.
Marc Dorsey - Crave June 26, 2004 M.C. Ol' Skool (from the old school) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
When I first heard Marc Dorsey remake "People Make the World Go Round" in 1994, I thought that he was so smooth. He made a comeback in 1999 with this debut album and I was slightly disappointed. I thought that Dorsey would deliver songs as mature as the aforementioned one and take it to some old-school soul level like Eric Benet or Rahsaan Patterson. Instead, he gave us those hip-hop/R&B-type numbers, sounding like another Ginuwine or Jesse Powell (not that those artists are bad, it's just that I thought he would be representing another genre). And there were one too many remakes, especially "As We Lay": what was that about?! He should have left that song alone. But there are some highlights like the title track and "In the Ghetto". This album wasn't promoted at all and I can kinda see why.
WONDERFUL VOICE-GOOD DEBUT February 28, 2002 Michael Williams (NEW YORK,NY USA) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
LIKE OTHER REVIEWERS, I WAS ALSO BLOWN AWAY WHEN I FIRST HEARD MARC'S REMAKE OF THE STYLISTICS' "PEOPLE MAKE THE WORLD GO 'ROUND" ON SPIKE LEE'S "CROOKLYN" SOUNDTRACK- I IMMEDIATELY BECAME A FAN. MARC ALSO DOES TWO SONGS ON THE SOUNDTRACK FOR SPIKE'S "CLOCKERS" (ONE OF WHICH IS PLAYED IN IT'S ENTIRETY DURING THE FILM'S OPENING CREDITS). WHEN I FOUND OUT THAT A FULL CD BY THIS GREAT SINGER WAS FINALLY AVAILABLE I RAN OUT AND PURCHASED A COPY FOR MYSELF.....AND WAS (JUST A LITTLE) DISAPPOINTED. DON'T GET ME WRONG- MR. DORSEY STILL HAS THAT GREAT VOICE, BUT SOME OF THE SONG SELECTIONS WERE JUST NOT TO MY LIKING; WHAT'S GOOD ON THE CD IS REALLY GOOD, BUT THE REST OF IT IS PRETTY MEDIOCRE, HEARD IT ALL BEFORE R&B. I GUESS MY MAIN DISAPPOINTMENT IS THAT ALL OF THE SONGS THAT MARC SANG ON THE TWO SPIKE LEE SOUNDTRACKS WERE SORT OF JAZZ INFLUENCED WITH STRONG RHYTHM ARRANGEMENTS AND POWERFUL LYRICS AND I WAS EXPECTING MORE OF THE SAME. I AM BY NO MEANS "DISSING" THIS ALBUM, THOUGH! AS STATED BEFORE, MARC SHINES ON A FEW CHOICE CUTS- MY FAVORITE IS "CAN YOU EVER LOVE SOMEBODY" WHICH STARTS OUT WITH A GOSPEL INFLUENCED ORGAN AND CONTINUES ON WITH A THUMPING BEAT AND MARC SINGING TO SOME WOMAN WHO DID HIM WRONG-DEFINITELY A PARTY BEAT- SHOULD HAVE BEEN RELEASED AS A SINGLE! THE TWO REMAKES ON THIS ALBUM ARE ALSO DONE QUITE WELL; STEVIE WONDER'S "ALL I DO" WAS ACTUALLY RELEASED AS A SINGLE IN THE U.K. AND MARC DOES A GREAT JOB ON THAT SONG BRINGING A '90'S SENSIBILITY FOR A YOUNGER GENERATION. I WAS NEVER A BIG FAN OF SHIRLEY MUDDOCK'S "AS WE LAY", BUT AS FAR AS "BEDROOM MUSIC" GOES, THIS SONG DEFINITELY SETS THE MOOD. "CRAVE" SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR ALL OF THE BRIAN MCKNIGHT FANS OUT THERE AND SHOWS THAT MARC CAN HOLD HIS OWN WITH THE SLOW JAMS (LIKE THERE WAS EVER A DOUBT ABOUT THAT). "IF YOU REALLY WANNA KNOW" AND "IN THE GHETTO" ARE ALSO COMMENDABLE SONGS, BUT WHEN LISTENING TO THESE SONGS YOU GET THE FEELING THAT YOU'VE HEARD SOMETHING LIKE THIS BEFORE (THE SAME GOES FOR "TELL YOUR MAN HE'S GOTTA GO"); MARC DORSEY SHOULD BE A MAJOR R&B STAR LIKE JOE AND MAXWELL- HE'S DEFINITELY GOT THE VOICE. I HOPE THAT THERE IS A SECOND MARC DORSEY ALBUM ON THE HORIZON WITH MORE INSPIRED SONGS AND MORE "LIVE" INSTRUMENTS ON SOME OF THE CUTS.

This album is another that most people slept on. I actually just found out about it a few months ago. His song, the title track Crave, is featured on The Wood soundtrack. His entire CD is very good. My favorite is Crave (#4), but he also made a commendable attempt at the Shirley Murdock classic As We Lay and Stevie Wonder's All I Do. I was impressed as I'd never heard a man sing As We Lay. All in all, it's a worthwhile purchase.
