Incredible set October 26, 2009 Hector L Quiles Years after having bought the box set, I still experience countless moments of joy, amazement, peace, etc from listening. Overall, I thoroughly recommend pinnock's expert direction with his great ensemble in these recordings over any other, including Hogwood/AAM.
Absolutely Fantastic July 11, 2009 Rich (United Kingdom) Pinnock and his period instrument orchestra scarely put a foot wrong in this boxed set of Mozart symphonies. It's not as 'complete' as Hogwood's earlier set as it doesn't include alternative movements/versions but for most people it will more than suffice. Mozart's reputation as a major symphonist rests primarily on the last four works, K504, K543, K550 and K551, and all of these are given excellent performances (in my opinion the opening Allegro of K504 is the finest single symphonic movement ever written). But these symphonies only make up a couple of the discs, so what about the rest. The early A major symphony K201 and the first G minor symphony K183 are both regarded as being among Mozart's earliest masterpieces, but there is some truly wonderful music in the even earlier symphonies, written when Mozart was just 15 or 16. My own personal favorites would be the beautiful symphony in A major K114 (the first movement is just glorious); the witty F major symphony K130, which has a massively exciting final movement; the Eb symphony K132, scored for two flutes and four horns; the ebullient D major symphony K133 which has a thrilling first movement, full of rhythmic drive and triumphant fanfares and the A major symphony K134, highly characteristic of Mozart's later works in the key. It is staggering that Mozart at 16 could write with the fluency of a composer twice his age. These early symphonies aren't masterpieces of Western art but do they have a perfection all of their own. With this set you can follow Mozart's development from his earliest work right through to the incomparable achievement of the final four symphonies.
Pinnock conducts from the harpsichord, keeping the fast tempi swift but also allowing slow movements the space to breath. The sound is clear but very warm with none of the astringency sometimes associated with period instrument performances. In many ways the English Concert sounds more like a modern chamber orchestra, although the horns bray magnificently and the timpani and trumpets are given prominence when necessary. There are lots of great performances around of the more famous works (the new set from Linn with Mackerras is terrific), but with this set you also have the opportunity to hear works that are hardly ever played but which provide a huge amount of pleasure.
If you are looking to purchase Mozart's symphonies, PLEASE buy this boxed set! March 9, 2009 Sophie A. (Alto, GA USA) I found myself inexorably drawn to this boxed set without the knowledge that Trevor Pinnock conducts from his harpsichord. As a pianist and harpsichordist myself, I think I understand why. I think Pinnock captures the clarity and brilliance of Mozart's symphonies by treating each instrument part as one key on the harpsichord. The result is a glorious and perfectly harmonious mix of melody floating above the harmony. In my opinion, there is no finer collection of Mozart's symphonies available. In comparison with the Bernstein, et. al. conductors of the 20th century, which sound muddy, sluggish, and uninspired, the Pinnock recording reveals Mozart's symphonies as, I think, he meant them to be performed--charming, vigorous, stunningly brilliant, and not afraid of fortisimmo. If you look to purchase just one boxed set of Mozart's symphonies, please do yourself a favor and purchase this one. You will not regret your decision.
Excellent Set - A tie between Pinnock and Hogwood December 2, 2008 J. Poss (Pahrump, Nevada) I partly agree with the reviewer, Lawrence S. Povlow. Except I don't think the Hogwood set's intonation problem is quite as bad as he may have implied. For instance Hogwood is still my top choice for Symphony No. 21 in A Major. Pinnock simple can not match the delicacy which Hogwood achieves here in No. 21. Also, Hogwoods recordings are mostly analog however, the recorded quality is actually better than Pinnock's because the recording venue used by Hogwood sounds better to my ears. In fact, I really hope that Decca or some other independent label re-masters all the analog Hogwood recordings in SACD and since they are I'm sure multi-channels masters SACD multi-channel re-issues would be fantastic!!!!
Pinnock's set really shines in the final 6 symphonies and since his are mostly DG's 4D recordings that means they are multi-channel 24 bit 48kHz sampled surround recordings in their original masters, so hopefully they will be re-issued in SACD multi-channel discs as well!!!
The best set going June 18, 2008 madamemusico (Cincinnati, Ohio USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Having read both the positive and negative reviews of this set, I decided to try it for myself. I believe that the negative reviews are all wrong. For one, the sound quality is crystal-clear; you can even hear the buzz of the oboes, and all inner voices, quite clearly, and nothing is muffled or under-recorded. For another, Pinnock is not, and has never been, one of those HIP performers who play in a bland, zippy, uninflected style. His Mozart, if anything, sometimes errs on the side of elegance; by pursuing an elegant, curving musical line, with sharply articulated accents in the forte passages, Pinnock does present a uniform style to the symphonies that some auditors may hear as non-interpretation, but I would suggest that listeners realize that Mozarrt was neither Haydn not Beethoven. He did not indulge in brusque humor or "sturm und drang" drama most of the time. There are, perhaps, three or four symphonies where a little more depth of interpretation would have been welcome (Symphony No. 40 being a prime example), yet Pinnock's vision is consistent and his style both elegant and exciting.
I find this to be a first-rate set of the Mozart symphonies; overall, much better than those of Hogwood, Mackerras, and a host of others.
