Here's the secret to mixing it so there are no lumps February 23, 2010 Studly (Minnesota) I've tried both the chocolate and vanilla versions of this whey protein. It's the first time I've tried protein drinks, and I was impressed that these tasted quite good. I prefer the vanilla for a couple reasons. The chocolate tastes good but is a bit too sweet. Also, if caffeine keeps you up at night, and if you're like me and drink a protein shake throughout the day, including just before bedtime, the chocolate may not be a good choice for you. Most chocolate products have caffeine in them, and although it doesn't say whether there's caffeine on the product label, I'm guessing the chocolate version of this does have caffeine.
The vanilla isn't as sweet as the chocolate, tastes very good too, and it's kind of a combination custard/subtle-vanilla flavor. It's definitely not a strong vanilla-only flavor.
But overall, both taste very good even with water (although using cold water from the fridge tastes better than warmer tap water) and are way better than what I thought a protein drink would taste like. Both flavors do have an after taste that lingers ... probably due to the artificial sweetener.
For some reason, with the two vanilla packages I've bought so far, that flavor clumps together more than the chocolate. The vanilla powder seems more moist and clumpy, and the chocolate power seems more dry and seems to mix better.
OK, here's the important details on how to mix either flavor so there are no lumps. I've tried mixing and shaking this every which way. Here's the best way to do it: Just get a wide-mouthed glass (it's easier to mix with), fill it with your liquid (use a big enough glass so you don't fill the liquid over half full or it'll spill out as you slosh it around), use a spoon or fork to start swirling the liquid, s-l-o-w-l-y poor in the powder, mixing continuously. Voila, no lumps!
You may have some residue stuck on your spoon or fork, and some foamy residue sticking to the side of the glass, but there should be no lumps in the liquid. If you do have some lumps, you poured the powder in too fast.
Also, an easy way to clean up the powdered residue on the inside of the glass is to rinse/soak it with hot water. Anything cooler, and it won't get as clean. I think the residue dissolves better in hot water than cold.
The only negative with this brand of protein powder is, when compared to its main competitor and what I'm guessing is the market leader -- Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey Protein -- the EAS Whey Protein has much more cholesterol in it, according to the nutrition facts. Otherwise, they are very nutritionally similar. I hope EAS figures out a way to lower the cholesterol in its product, as ON did. But the good news is, according to many studies, dietary cholesterol eaten usually doesn't have a significant impact on a person's overall cholesterol level. So for the money I save using EAS whey protein, I'll take that trade off. But if they were the same price, I'd probably by the Optimum Nutrition product instead.
Also, if I was in an EAS focus group, I'd put on my wish list that it would be nice if EAS could reduce the saturated fat in this product. I take 5 scoops a day, so that is 5 grams of saturated fat that I get from this product alone. That's 25% of your recommended daily allowance of saturated fat -- not counting your meals. I'm sure they'd have to sacrifice taste a little bit to reduce the saturated fat, but I'd be all for that trade-off.
Best Quality for the buck February 22, 2010 jjjjjjjjjbbbbbbbb (gville, nc) Great powder, you can spend a ton more on protein, but at the end of the day whey is whey, and it is a blend of isolate and concentrate, not casein/soy/whey blend. Casein/soy/whey blend is a great way to take protein! just do a little research on how. It also has 23g of protein in a 30g scoop, gotta watch that when choosing powders, ive found some with 25g to a 50g scoop and worst.
Be Aware February 15, 2010 John Parkinson (Kansas City) This a great product, I read about it in Bill Phillips book "Body for Life". EAS was purchased by Abbott Laboratories several years ago another company known for it's quality. I've been drinking this stuff almost daily for several years, but there does seem to be a issue with it depending on the weather. On two occassions I've ordered the 5lb Vanilla package and the taste has been off. Can't describe it, but the taste is off, and the product didn't blend well. The last batch I ordered, shipped from the West (warm weather) in a UPS truck and ended up on my door step in -17 degree weather. Also had the same issue last summer. I contacted Abbott and they sent me a check for my order, but I believe that the issue is this product has a temperature range that it should be stored and shipped in. Once you go above it, or below it, it effects the taste and how smoothly this product blends. Just something to be aware of, I intend to bulk up during certain times of the year...
How do I know if it's working??? February 9, 2010 Vernon Ledesma (Washington, DC USA) After a workout, I pour 16 ounces of non-fat milk into a blender with a few ice cubes and mix with three scoops of the chocolate power and with one scoop of Red MIlls protein powder. I also add a table spoon of cocoa (for the flavonoids). The taste is not bad, but it makes me a little gassy for the next couple of hours. (Sorry, roomy.) I have been doing this for a few weeks, and I am going to continue the routine until someone tells me there is something better. I just wish I could measure the benefits. Anyway, based on everything I have read, EAS seems to be a quality product and I trust it.
Best Tasting Protein Powder available!! January 11, 2010 Dr J C Rose (docmusik) Their Whey and their Soy protein powders are both really good. I have tried MANY different protein powers and drinks, and none are as tasty and satisfying as the EAS brand. I am so happy I found it!
